Glossary
Education Institution
In Rio Education, it is referring to an institution of higher (or tertiary) education and research which awards academic degrees in various academic disciplines. It typically provide undergraduate education and postgraduate education.
University Department
An academic department is a division of a university or school faculty devoted to a particular academic discipline
Term
An academic term (or simply “term”) is a portion of an academic year, the time during which an educational institution holds classes. The schedules adopted vary widely.
Semester
A semester system divides the academic year into two terms of equal length. There is often an optional summer session half as long as a full semester.
Trimester
A trimester system divides the academic year into three terms of 14 to 16 weeks each
Quarter
A quarter system divides the academic year into four terms, one per season
Contact
A contact can be either student, person in charge or lecturer
Accredited Program
An Accredited Program offers accreditation to students upon completing the necessary study journey
Third-party attestation of an individual’s level of knowledge or proficiency in a certain industry or profession
Certificate Programs

Course
A course is a unit of teaching that typically lasts one academic term, is led by one or more instructors (teachers or professors), and has a fixed roster of students. A course is usually an individual subject. Students may receive a grade and academic credit after completion of the course
Grade
Standardized measurements of varying levels of achievement in a course. It can be in a form of points, levels, GPA and others
Course Offering
Defines the actual courses to be offered on each Academic Terms and available to be enrolled by students
Program Course
Courses can be mixed and matched in different programs to cater for the needs of different accreditation majors. For example, a program “Bachelors of Business Management” can includes courses such as Business 101, Leadership 101, Accounting Basic etc
Program Group
Courses bundled into Program can be further categorised if they are a mandatory or elective courses. It can be further grouped into other categories according to the business needs
Pathway
A predefined learning journey towards accreditation
Program Pathway
Specific courses, academic programs, and learning experiences that students complete along their accreditation journey
Pathway Unit
Defines the recommended courses to be completed in each study term, which to be defined in the program pathway. This usually served as a best practice recommendation of a study pathway
Program Application
Student need to undergo this application process to determine if they have meet the pre-requisite of the program of their study choices.
Agent
Education agent usually helps student with the admission application process, visa application process or any other assistance needed during the application and enrollment process
Program Enrollment
Once student have meet the pre-requisite required for the desire program, he can proceed with the actual program enrollment process for the desire intake term
Location
Refers to a campus location or the venue where the actual classes to be conducted. ie: Lecturer Hall
Session
Determines number of study sessions a student need to undergo for a specific course. ie: Accounting 101 will have 12 lecturer sessions and 24 tutorial sessions for the entire term.
Session Connection
This indicates the actual sessions which the student needs to attend as part of the learning journey of a specific course
Course Connnection
This contains the course information (study duration, fees, results etc) from the Program which student enrolled
CRICOS
Provides student information which compliance with The Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students (CRICOS)
VETFEE
Provides a distribution of VET FEE‑HELP / VET Student Loans student loans for a selected reporting period/year based on pre‑defined set of criteria
FEE-HELP
Provides a distribution of FEE‑HELP student loans for a selected reporting period/year based on pre‑defined set of criteria
TEQSA PIR
The Provider Information Request (PIR) is a request for information under Section 28 of the Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency Act 2011. The collection is undertaken to ensure key data is available on all higher education providers to help inform TEQSA’s risk-based approach to regulation of the sector
AVETMISS
AVETMISS stands for the Australian Vocational Education and Training Management Information Statistical Standard. It is a national data standard that ensures consistent and accurate capture and reporting of Vocational Education and Training (VET) information about students
Census Date
The last date you can withdraw from a subject without being financially liable i.e. having to pay for the subject
Core Course
Mandatory courses that all students are required to complete during their accreditation journey
Elective Course
Optional courses that students choose to take and that may or may not satisfy credit requirements for graduation
Core Selective Course
A pool of mandatory courses that students need to complete part of them to fulfill their accreditation requirement
